Two major developments in South Kesteven are in the running for prestigious building industry awards.
The schemes shortlisted in in the East Midlands regional finals of this year’s Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards are:
- Savoy Cinema, Grantham (Best Large Commercial Project)
- Phase 2, Wherry’s Lane, Bourne (Best High Volume New Housing Development)
The projects were nominated by East Midlands Building Control, which ensured both were fully compliant with building regulations. The winners will be announced at a digital awards ceremony on Thursday 27 August.
Gravitas Housing, a commercial company owned by South Kesteven District Council, was behind the £3m development in Wherry’s Lane designed to offer modern, town centre accommodation. The first resident received the keys to their new home in March.
The 20 two-bedroom apartments and five three-bedroom townhouses were built after an SKDC survey identified a low supply of town centre homes, coupled with buoyant demand for quality properties in Bourne.
Cllr Kelham Cooke, said: “Making the shortlist for these prestigious awards recognises the hard work and attention to detail that went into drawing up the plans for Wherry’s Lane and seeing the project through to completion.
“Attracting residents to come and live in town centres is an essential part of our vision for the district. These affordable properties are enabling young people to get on to the housing ladder and contribute to the vitality of the town centre.”
Building work on the 20,000sq ft Savoy Cinema, which opened last year, was led by contractor GF Tomlinson. The complex also includes a new centre for the University of Lincoln, bringing higher education opportunities to the town.
The chairman of SKDC, Cllr Jacky Smith, said: “This multi-million pound development is a major investment in Grantham and is a vital part of our overall vision for improvements to the town centre. To be nominated for the LABC awards is testament to all the hard work that went into this project.”
East Midlands Building Control is a building control service partnership between SKDC, Rushcliffe Borough Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council. It is based at SKDC’s St Peter’s Hill offices in Grantham.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards focus on technical innovation and construction quality. The use of creative solutions to improve sustainability and energy efficiency and cooperative team working are among the criteria used by the judges.
