Back in March, when we went into lock-down, none of us imagined that seven months on we would still be grappling with the virus and its far-reaching consequences. But here we are - heading into winter as Covid-19 continues to dominate both our daily life and our future outlook.
Like most areas of the country, South Kesteven is at alert level one, meaning that our risk from the pandemic is classed as ‘medium’. However, the rate of infection is high compared to other districts within Lincolnshire and the virus continues to pose a very real risk to us all. That’s why the need to keep each other safe and to continue to follow the Government’s guidelines is as important as ever.
In addition to protecting our physical health – looking after our mental health and looking out for each other is just as vital. As self-isolation and social-distancing become the norm, the number of people reporting feelings of loneliness is soaring.
As a Council and community, we have rallied together – creating a network of support for those most in need. Since March, the Council has contacted nearly 18,000 vulnerable residents to offer assistance and we have made 1,500 calls to vulnerable residents as part of our befriending programme. Importantly, we have also worked with local partners - supporting them to support others.
Living in South Kesteven, we are incredibly lucky to have a large number of local charities who work tirelessly to help others within our community. One of the ways that the Council is supporting these good causes is through LotterySK.
LotterySK not only raises much-needed funds for charities like mental-health and disability support groups, it also provides players with the opportunity to win up to £25,000.
Since Spring, the support from the local community has been overwhelming – with the lottery on course to raise over £67,000 this year. And, amazingly, it has raised more than £130,000 since its launch!
Despite this wonderful support from people across our district, our local charities are facing an uphill struggle. As demands on services continue to rise and funding continues to fall – many charities are battling for their very survival. It is safe to say that at this time, LotterySK has never been more needed.
With infection rates rising, it seems that Covid-19 is with us for the foreseeable future. But as we continue to navigate the road ahead, the way that people across South Kesteven have stuck together will, I believe, leave a lasting legacy. Times are certainly tough – but our community spirit has never been stronger.
